Periodically I’ve tried the upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04 from the Software Updater app, and today it got further than usual, before failing with an error message that it couldn’t complete the upgrade. From a quick glance in the logs it looked like an issue updating the budgie-desktop pkg, though I didn’t dive in to it.
However, I noticed that the rollback wasn’t complete – it updated the apt sources to point to noble (24.04), so on a whim I tried running ‘apt update; apt upgrade’ in a terminal window and crossed my fingers.
It… kinda worked – I could reboot my laptop but there was some weirdness with fonts, and a big problem with the window manager: I couldn’t get it focus from say a terminal window to something else.
And trying to run apt update after the reboot ran into an apt dependency issue with one of the terminfo packages (libtinfo6, IIRC). I suppose with enough determination I might have been able to sort out the breakage, but it didn’t seem worth the bother, and I had backups (both through timeshift and the backup app), so I went for a fresh 24.04 install. Which so far is working well.
