Ubuntu 24.04 release notes in Ubuntu Budgie upgrade

Hey there,

My software updater popped up today with a notice that Ubuntu Budgie 24.04.1 LTS was available for my 22.04 install. However, when I start the upgrade, I noticed that the release notes are for the normal flavor of Ubuntu, and not Ubuntu Budgie.

Can I safely upgrade and assume I get Ubuntu Budgie 24.04.1, or will this install the normal flavor and break my Budgie?

Thanks

At the end of the day, all official flavours share the same repos and the hard work all developers put into those repos.

The default release note applies to all. Specific flavour notes are also linked.

Do check the upgrade instructions above

As long as your original install was ubuntu budgie and you have the ubuntu-budgie-desktop meta package installed then the uplift should be ok.

I would though recommend you take a disk image as a backup. I am sure you are regularly doing this anyway to protect yourself from both major hardware and occasionaly software issues.

When I upgraded to UB 24.04, I preferred to do a fresh install as I always do, just to clean things up a bit. @moso’s message persuaded me to try the upgrade from the terminal:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

As I’d already done it on Zorin and LMDE using their dedicated applications, I figured there was no risk and that, in any case, I wasn’t using the old distribution anymore.

So, here’s my feedback: even considering that I had installed a number of applications, the process seemed really long — I didn’t time it but the warning is correct, it takes several hours.
What’s more, you have to stand next to your computer to hit “Enter” a good ten times to accept the default choice option, the impact of which only specialists understand.

At the end, you still have to reactivate the PPAs if they’ve developed a “Noble” branch.

Quick summary: my system isn’t really broken, but it has inherited inextricable translation problems: to sum up, half of the menu and applications are in English, half in French.
What’s more, the desktop context menu no longer gives access to system or desktop settings.
Finally, following Ubuntu’s new philosophy, Thunderbird has been converted to snap (although it still works).

In short, I’m rather disappointed with the result and, from my modest user point of view, I don’t recommend… :no_mouth:

Does what happened to me have anything to do with this?

Let’s wait, anyway.
