26.04 wayland testing - are you brave enough?

Nothing that we can do with the translation gaps. That really is for folks to help with.

Crystal-dock manages its own translations - if there are areas that are not covered by its translations then please do raise an issue with that github project.

budgie-control-center managed by the buddiesofbudgie project via their transifex.

Our slicksddm theme translations that is managed by our transifex instance.

the desktop context menu no longer allows you to create new folders and files.

Yeah - its no longer nemo-desktop. nemo-desktop in 26.04 is not wayland compatible so we have had to drop it. We are using budgie-desktop-view which is buddiesofbudgie solution. It is strictly a desktop icons solution - not a fully fledged icons + file-manager solution.

We’ll relook at this again for 26.10 where we note last week in the nemo github repository positive moves to wayland was committed. We’ll have to wait to see when that is going to be released.

Thanks, David, I’ll take a look at all that.

Regarding Crystal Dock, it also freezes when you disable or re-enable the display of icons on the desktop from Budgie Desktop Settings.

interesting. Sounds like a gtk-layer-shell issue. Will have a look at that. Might need to propose to buddiesofbudgie with its crystal-dock module an addition - detect the switcheroo with desktop-icons toggle and do an equivalent of ā€œkill crystal-dock, wait a fraction of a second and then restartā€

Testing yesterday I could not get crystal-dock to freeze by toggling the option on / off repeatedly, logging off / on and toggle.

Suggest retest today with the latest changes that includes the crystal-dock 5 second delay on start patch.

UB 26.04 Daily up to date.

  • Budgie Desktop Settings > Desktop > Desktop Icons > Off
  • Budgie Desktop Settings > Desktop > Desktop Icons > On

crystal-dock frozen.

  • Budgie Desktop Settings > Desktop > Desktop Icons > Off

crystal-dock unfrozen.

is this in a virtual machine or a real piece of tin?

Why VM ? Actual installation.

k … so I’ll knock up a PPA just for you to test with!

Sorry, but do I need to activate the PPA first?
I thought it was for tests that I don’t understand: Testing Budgie Desktop with Labwc.

I’ll create a PPA specifically for you to install budgie-desktop with a suggested fix. Since I can’t reproduce it, I need you to see if the suggested fix works. You can ppa-purge it afterwards to restore back to the repository version.

Let me know if you don’t want to test this way.

Okay, I’ll take this PPA — to reach 20 characters…

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/crystal-dock
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
reboot --

This modification solves the problem.

The only minor drawback is that crystal-dock disappears for a second when the desktop icon display is switched on or off in Budgie Desktop Settings, which causes ShowTime to lose its position meanwhile.
You need to set visibility to autohide.

I’ve just checked another problem: the numeric keypad is not kept enabled when you log out or reboot.

Another note: tooltips only appear when Crystal Dock is positioned at the bottom of the screen.

Did you notice that when you take a screenshot with Budgie Screenshot in ā€˜Selection’ mode, it is offset to the right of the selected area?

I outlined the raccoon, and this is the result:

A tool like Ksnip produces better results.

Thats very interesting. Works just fine here.

So do you have any fractional scaling factors? DPI settings? wdisplays scaled in anyway?

Not worried about that - desktop icons on or off isnt something I expect people to be doing day-in-day-out. Freezes - most definitely something to resolve. I’ll PR this to upstream.

Is this for crystal dock tooltips? Please report the issue here GitHub - dangvd/crystal-dock: A cool dock (desktop panel) for Linux desktop Ā· GitHub

Oh, yes, DPI scale…
I think Wayland will require some adaptation.
