26.10 Testing - Are you brave enough?

We are now looking for experienced testers who want to help the UB team with early testing of our Wayland offering. This should NOT be used who want a stable system.

You can test via a 26.10 install with a test PPA and with the latest 26.10 daily ISO

If you have spare hardware and don’t mind regularly reinstalling when (and I mean WHEN) this testing phase eats your installation then feel free to give your feedback here. Early testing will improve the final release

Testing the install with GNOME Boxes/LXC/QEMU-KVM works. Do note that with host acceleration option turned on the cursor can be shown upside-down. This is a QEMU issue.

Testing the install with Virtualbox 7.2.4 without 3D acceleration does not work

This first post will be updated with the latest important info - so you don’t need to trawl through the posts. Remember - everything listed below is subject to change/removal and should not be used as indicative with this preproduction release.

Do not report bugs to launchpad - all issues should be reported here and we will advise whether to also report to our upstream

The key things to note:

  1. We are being guided this time around via our roadmapall help will be graciously received
  2. Look out for our new Raven widget called budgie-radio-widget (backported to 26.04)

From a bug fix to-do POV:

The greeter has some default images we have created - 256x256 png format.

We would love folk to find/create their own “avatars” to replace these. Lets see your creations!

draft release notes.

Testing Budgie Desktop with Labwc

For Ubuntu Budgie with Wayland this can be tested via our daily ISO together with the development only PPA - TBD

For 26.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/wayland-test && sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo apt autoremove
reboot --

--> login to the desktop
nohup budgie-panel --reset --raven-reset --replace &

Notes

Testing Budgie with Wayfire

Wayfire is a great compositor if you like subtle animations. Via wayfire.ini you can configure other effects like the cube to switch workspaces.

If you would like to help with making wayfire a first-class citizen we have now packaged an experimental package to get you going

. Here is a repo to get you going with budgie + wayfire development - this will change later to an upstream repo called compositor-sessions when we upstream the changes to make them available for all budgie users.

Creating Budgie with Sway

Let us know if you have an interest in helping to develop Budgie with Sway

Budgie with Miriway

If you have an interest in using Budgie with Mir/Miriway then this repo has the setup for this window manager. Again - let us know your interest in helping to develop this variant.

Todays daily includes the stonking config for budgie welcome. All the backports packages have been carried into stonking now.

… and a simple development wallpaper to be replaced once the mascot for stonking is available.

enjoy!

First changes to test:

  1. budgie-weathershow: this now has the ability to change the units for wind e.g. km/h, beaufort, knots etc.
  2. budgie-weathershow: lots of changes to make the applet robust from bad data being received from open-weather. This should stop things like the panel crashing
  3. budgie-wallstreet: Specific daytime & nighttime hour to allow setting wallpaper specifically for the daytime and nighttime - controlled via menu - wallstreet-control
  4. uploaded these changes to the wayland-test PPA - for both 26.04 and 26.10

In 26.10 labwc has been updated to 0.9.7 - so a jump from the resolute v0.9.3.

Note - I would expect in this cycle for labwc to jump to 0.20.x with wlroot 0.20.x - this is a big change with really nice upstream changes. More notes on this when this happens together with any changes to budgie-desktop to accommodate the new version

Both budgie-weathershow and budgie-wallstreet work fine on 26.04.

Too bad we can’t get a forecast that goes a little beyond two and a half days.

Budgie on wayfire

I’ve now packaged a new budgie session that utilises wayfire as the window manager (compositor).

It is available in our wayland-test PPA - the package is called “budgie-wayfire-session”

After installing - reboot and change the session on the logon screen “budgie-desktop (wayfire)”

notes

This is work in progress - so I’m particularly interested in looking at existing budgie capabilities invoked via budgie-desktop-settings and budgie-control-center and seeing that there is suitable coverage via wayfire - treat this as “alpha testing”

Configuration of wayfire is via its config file via ~/.config/budgie-desktop/wayfire.

On first logon this config is copied from /usr/share/budgie-desktop/wayfire - so you can always copy over from the template if you mess up the local wayfire config.

Local changes to the config file often apply immediately when you save the config file.

There is a utility called wcm - use with care. If often fills the config file with lots of defaults - so the config file will look very messy quite quickly. But it is an easy way to try manual changes if the budgie part isn’t working as you expect.

You meant “budgie-wayfire-session”, didn’t you?

You read my mind…

Black is black… Everything is black, except for the cursor.

You should see “budgie-desktop (wayfire)” as an available session

Yes, I did log in to “Wayfire,” but when the desktop appeared, all I could see was a cursor on a black background…

very odd

This gives me a working wayfire based desktop on 26.04

For once, I’m the one having some surprising issues.

Question: I update regularly, does that equate to installing a newer ISO for this kind of thing?

Shouldn’t needs to. I have this is my resolute pre beta installed laptop.

To grab the above screenshots i installed on a resolute final installed qemu, full update, added the wayland test ppa, the session package and rebooted. For good measure I also added the polkit ppa because I was curious if I could see any polkit issues on qemu. No so far.
