Brave browser doesn't open in incognito mode neither from Plank dock nor from the AppMenu

For the last 30 days, I’m not able to open the Brave browser, pinned to my plank dock, in incognito mode. I just right-click and select ‘New Incognito Window’. It just tries to open and closes immediately, more like crashing. It’s the same behavior when I try from AppMenu as well. I’ve tried it in UB 22.04.3 and UB 23.04 as well. It’s the same issue. It was working perfectly before.

However, I don’t see this issue in other distros like Linux Mint and Parrot OS.

I’ve tried few stuff from the google with no luck. Is anyone else facing the same issue as me?

P.S: I’ve downloaded and installed the brave browser directly from the Brave website.

Suggest run brave from a terminal and try going incognito. Any messages displayed in the terminal when the app crashes?

Run

journalctl -ae --full

Anything about brave in the last few entries?

Hi fossfreedom. Hope you are doing good.

Yeah. I’ve tried it from CLI using ‘brave-browser --incognito’ and I get below logs -

this? shell - chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(162)] Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled - Stack Overflow

i.e. a bad extension is causing issues for you?

I’ve only ‘Hangouts’ and ‘WebTorrent’ extensions enabled. I believe they came by default. I’ve disabled them and tried launching from CLI again. It didn’t work at all.

Tilix keeps echoing below messages whenever I try to open it from CLI -

[13753:13753:0830/160730.053026:ERROR:chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(163)] Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled.

probably best ask on the brave forum with the above information in your post.

Sure @fossfreedom.

I just posted in this forum to see if anyone else using UB had come across such issue.

Thank you.

By any chance, if you/your team want to reproduce this issue in your test environment VM, you can use ‘brave-browser --incognito’ and see.

On my jammy install the incognito switch launches brave ok.

I do see “[82246:82246:0830/211112.684806:ERROR:chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(163)] Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled.” in the terminal - but no issue here with the browser that I have observed.

Okay. I’ve a feeling that it has got something to do with the below Segmentation fault error log -

Aug 30 16:09:20 Konoha dbus-daemon[441]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name=‘org.bluez’ unit=‘dbus-org.bluez.service’ requested by ‘:1.256’ (uid=1000 pid=14744 comm=“/opt/brave.com/brave/brave " label=“unconfined”)

you are using virtualbox which in itself can cause issues - 3D graphics vs no 3D graphics - 16Mb video memory vs 128Mb Video Memory, VMSVGA vs VBOXSVGA

Also you are short of memory - should be using a minimum of 4GB RAM

Yup. You are right. I’m using 64MB video memory with VBOXVGA.

Usually 2GB of RAM with two cores processor suits for my need perfectly. But I got what you said.
