'Budgie Welcome' not displayed in default local language (UB 24.04)

I’ve come to regard this as an annoying but normal inconvenience, until I came across this topic:

I’ve tried the recommended solution, but it doesn’t work:

budgie-welcome --locale=fr_FR.UTF-8

Something to do with the snap format?

Here’s the debug mode output:

budgie-welcome --debug

Any solution?
Thanks in advance.

Need more information as per each of those steps in that link. Please copy paste here. Cheers

Thank you for replying, David.

Actually the problem seems to lie in the path that is used :

Using the /snap/ubuntu-budgie-welcome/524/usr/share/budgie-welcome/ path.

The ‘missing’ .html pages are in the ‘current’ directory:

/snap/ubuntu-budgie-welcome/current/usr/share/budgie-welcome/i18n/fr
├── budgie-applets.html
├── community.html
├── default.html
├── donate.html
├── features.html
├── gaming.html
├── getinvolved.html
├── gettingstarted.html
├── index.html
├── introduction.html
├── recommendations.html
└── store.html

It remains to be seen why the application isn’t using the correct path. :no_mouth:

Welcome calculates locale stuff depending upon what your locale environment variables are set to.

So i need to understand your setup.

What language were you expecting to see welcome in, together with each of the values of the various commands in that linked thread.

Ok, my first language is French, but I’ve also installed English so that I can take screenshots to post on the forum.

In this case, “Welcome” and “Makeovers” should automatically adapt to the language change, just like the rest, right?
I’m not 100% sure, but I think the problem already existed in UB 22.04, or even 20.04.

yes. Lets see if its missing a locale calculation for your setup

What is the output of the following:

locale -a
locale charmap

Then I need you to-do the python stuff here Budgie Welcome is in a different language from the rest of the UI - #6 by fossfreedom

Here they are:

Is ‘LC_ALL’ the culprit?

I did the Python commands this morning, after consulting the linked page. I created this topic precisely because everything seemed to be correct, except for the deprecation warning:

Same problem on UB 24.10, with this message when launching ‘Welcome’:

It disappears when you do snap refresh.

Same terminal outputs too.

ok - I’ve done a tweak to welcome. When launchpad builds it I will ping to ask you to test it.

Thanks a lot. I’d like to.

May I take this opportunity to point out a detail correction?

The image /snap/ubuntu-budgie-welcome/current/usr/share/budgie-welcome/img/welcome/blankwordmark.svg related to the tag <img id=“wordmark” src=“../../img/welcome/blank.svg”> should be renamed to avoid a broken link.

Launchpad had a bit of a nightmare over the weekend. Canonical are now resolving. The snap has just completed building.

Refresh the snap from the edge channel and rerun

snap refresh ubuntu-budgie-welcome --edge

Thanks David, the common language is now recognised.
However, we still need to ensure that the pages are all in French (in my case) or entirely in French.
If there is a need for someone to help with the translation, I’d be happy to.

thx

Current fr = 84% completed
fr_FR is only 2% completed

this has now been released as stable - so you can switch from edge to stable again i.e.

snap refresh ubuntu-budgie-welcome --channel=stable/ubuntu-24.04

Thanks a lot, but there is a problem:

error : cannot refresh "ubuntu-budgie-welcome", "stable/ubuntu-24.04": snap "stable/ubuntu-24.04" is not installed

missed the --channel= parameter - edited that in above.

Hi @fossfreedom!

Sorry if this isn’t the right place to post these suggestions.

I’ve just finished the French translation of Budgie Welcome and have taken the opportunity to check it thoroughly.
Is there any way I can check that my work is correct before I publish it?

I have also found a few things that need to be corrected:

  • The link to the online store should be removed as it no longer exists.
  • The link to involvement opportunities should also be corrected to direct users to the “Get Involved” section of the forum.
  • Some of the shortcuts in the ‘Getting Started’ section don’t work. Perhaps it would be a good idea to stick to the most common shortcuts, without adding the Windows Shuffler shortcuts presented in its configuration module.
  • Finally, the page dedicated to Budgie applets should be cleaned up, as some are no longer distributed.

Just publish it and I’ll drag it in - once it builds then you can test it in the edge channel

A new store is due soon - so the link will be valid then

will look

Let me know which are no longer applicable and will correct.

Let me know the version of ubuntu and the applets that shouldn’t be in the applets section. That can be fixed.

Ok, @fossfreedom, I haven’t forgotten, but it’s a tedious task.

The names of some applets don’t match the “budgie-applet_name-applet” pattern, but I’ve checked them in another forms.

If I’m not mistaken, these five applets are no more available in the UB 24.04 repository nor are they offered for installation in the “Budgie Extras” page of “Budgie Welcome”, but they appear in the file for_translation_budgie-welcome_budgie-applets.po, at least for French:

Haste
Screenshot
Wallstreet
Window Mover
Workspace Overview

On the other hand, these other six are available in the UB 24.04 repository and can be installed, but they don’t appear in the “Budgie Extras” page of “Budgie Welcome”:

budgie-analogue-clock-applet 2.0-0ubuntu1~lunar [backports/noble main]
budgie-app-launcher-applet 1.8.0-1build3 [Ubuntu/noble universe]
budgie-clockworks-applet 1.8.0-1build3 [Ubuntu/noble universe]
budgie-fuzzyclock-applet 1.8.0-1build3 [Ubuntu/noble universe]
budgie-kangaroo-applet 1.8.0-1build3 [Ubuntu/noble universe]

budgie-cputemp-applet 1.2.0-0ubuntu1~hirsute [backports/noble main]

There is a translation of the description of the first five in the file for_translation_budgie-welcome_budgie-applets.po, at least for French.
But the latter is not even mentioned.

I keep checking that all these applets are working properly.

Applets with translations not available in 24.04 are available for older versions of UB - so the translations are still valid and shown in those earlier versions.

CPU Temp was an odd one - don’t know why it disappeared from welcome - this is now fixed.

Similarly, the other applets you indicated also now appear.

I didn’t see any new french translations - so I didn’t pull the latest translations.

snap refresh

^^^ that will install the latest available welcome
