Not sure if this is an official account @ubuntubudgie@mastodon.social? You could actually replace that Twitter/X link on your website with Mastodon and/or Bsky, just for the warm feeling inside.
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes,that is the account we are using on Mastodon.
I agree, the Twitter/X logo needs to be updated, and we can add Mastodon there for sure. @GrindamN what do you think?
I may be wrong, but I don’t think @xtoph was talking about the fact that X’s logo was outdated, but rather about “replacing” X with Mastodon and/or Bluesky for reasons that have to do with its evolution and/or its new owner, as some newspapers and organisations have started to do.
Personally, I’d also get rid of FB for similar reasons.
Yes, that’s correct.
Adding Mastodon is a great start, but I personally don’t feel any sympathy for X and Meta and see their philosophies as a threat not only to FOSS. I mentioned Bsky because this might become the place where to reach the masses so it could at least be useful to have an account there.
The icons for all official profiles have been updated to better suit their official color schemes. Mastadon profile was also added to the official page.
On a number of pages, but not all, “Home” in particular.
Clean the cache. In particular the Home page is cached the most since it is usually the first page users visit.
It should be visible by now, since the server side cache has been cleaned.
I wish to thank you all for engaging in this post. I understand the point of view and on a personal level, I have no problem to admit I agree. I am very biased towards open source, decentralized, federated and self-hosting friendly solutions.
As a project we want to spread the word of Open Source, Linux, and Ubuntu Budgie to a wide audience. People choose and use social media platform for a variety of reasons. If we limit our outreach to platforms that are already catering to the FOSS/Linux crowd, we are not doing a very good job at spreading the word.
People not on FOSS friendly social media might not be there due to a lack of awareness. If we can reach a wider audience, we have the opportunity to engage, spark some curiosity, raise awareness and bring in more contributors.
With this message I do not want to close the discussion, but to bring my point of view. Further ideas, comments, and constructive criticism are always welcome here!
This is an excellent argument about raising awareness where it is most needed. It is a strong point for keeping the accounts on X and Meta alive and posting there for a better outreach.
I’m not yet totally convinced, however, that displaying the logos on the Budgie pages will contribute. People who see these logos already know about Ubuntu Budgie and I don’t see a benefit of sending them to X if they can get the same information through a better channel.
So, with your argument, the direction should actually be from X to Budgie, not the other way round.
This is a good point that you make about promoting platforms, and I am also well aware that we all have our preferences and the discussion can get quite intense around which platform is doing what. I appreciate that we are all keeping this very civilized and drama free. I really do.
If I consider users that get to our website, they see the icon of the social media platform they use and love. They click there and easily follow us and perhaps even promote the project. And for the project, it is not bad.
We try to keep post parity on all the platforms we have so that users can choose their platform of choice without ever having to go to the ones they do not enjoy.
One thing that we could do that I do not see as a negative, is to our X and Facebook users know that they can also follow us on FOSS friendly platforms, if they would like to.
