Has anyone else come across this? If i leave the menu open the screen will not shut down and leaves everything exposed that i have left open. When i try to resume work it will then shut off.

Yeah. That would be expected. Menu popovers grab all input events, so nothing else gets a lookin such as the lock events.
Yes, In have seen this as well with other panel drop downs. It will also prevent a monitor from going into sleep mode.
Well that makes sense then and yes the monitor was on all night too.

IMHO, this is a bad thing, I don’t think he Gnome desktop behaves this way.
