Virtualbox from the repository works correctly with kernel 6.5.0-45Generic. However, with the 6.8.0-40 kernel it fails:

Have you got the package virtualbox-hwe installed?
I don’t jave virtualbox-hwe. I have a guest-utils-hwe and guest-x11-hwe which installled, but the VB still aborted.
FYIW, Virtualbox on 24.04 is version 6.1.50. Virtualbox on 24.04 is 7.0.16.
Perhaps the Ubuntu team shouldhave upgraded VB to the same release as 24.04?
My bad. I read it wrong. virtualbox-hwe is the enablement stack source package for installing the guest utils within a ubuntu vm running the hwe stack.
Doesnt help here in your scenario.
I have had an open bug report for some time now. Since nothing has been happening I went ahead and installed Virtualbox 7.0.20 which runs with the 6.8 kernel.
