My question with Ubuntu is going Wayland only.
Is it possible to get Ubuntu budgie 26.04 to support x11 (or Xlibra) as Wayland crashes a lot on certain hardware.
depends on what you mean by crashes? graphics? or the compositor?
budgie uses labwc by default and we have wayfire as a test compositor. Ubuntu uses mutter. So if you are seeing crashes with mutter, it doesn’t automatically translate as crashes in other compositors.
No - budgie-desktop 10.10 is strictly wayland via labwc or wayfire.

To clarify, the crashes are full desktop-interface crashes that drop me straight back to the login screen. I am running a legacy machine (an HP 8000 Elite with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 and an older legacy amd GPU). My current graphics card lacks native hardware support for modern Wayland features like Atomic Mode Setting (AMS) or GBM. On X11, the legacy drivers handle desktop rendering flawlessly, but on Wayland, the desktop environment completely chokes and crashes.
Since Budgie 10.10 is strictly Wayland-only, is it possible to safely install and run the older Budgie 10.9 components on Ubuntu 26.04 via an external PPA or repository to keep X11 compatibility? Or is the entire desktop environment architecture moving forward strictly dependent on labwc / wayfire protocols now?
There isnt anything to stop people creating a ppa that builds budgie 10.9 and magpie for 26.04. That isnt something myself or the team will do ourselves.

Since X11 code is fully stripped from 10.10, I’ve decided to migrate this machine over to a lightweight X11-native distribution to keep my legacy hardware running smoothly.
