Just came here after watching Lunduke on YouTube. I hope no one at Ubuntu is celebrating Charlie Kirks assassination. Apparently, developers and (some) management at Red Hat are doing just that. Of course, there are other distributions doing the same. I’m not a big fan of Mr. Kirk, I barely know of him, but I do believe in Free Speech just as I believe in Free and Open Source Software. No one deserves to die for their different opinion on any topic.
Fully agree with you.
Being a european I don’t really follow who is what in America, so this person isn’t someone I am aware of. But certainly, no one should be ‘celebrating’ any unfortunate incidents occurring to our fellow travellers.
Ubuntu: “humanity to others” and the interconnectedness of individuals
I spent the first 30 years of my life in America. That was a long time ago. I’ve been living in Germany since. Normally, if it wasn’t for Devs. celebrating this, I wouldn’t have mentioned it at all. Its a BAD LOOK for Linux.
lets not compartmentalise all us devs into one bucket! In all of society we all have our views and foilbles - definitely don’t speak as one voice.
So some may have one view point - others will be radically different. That in many ways is your crux of you initial thoughts - “free speech” etc..
But certainly “No one deserves to die for their different opinion” I would hope all can readily agree with.
Agreed. Murder is murder. No justification for it.
Karol Ugghst and Jordan Putridis are despicable human beings. It’s been proven many times already. And you can add Bassi or Bicha to that Red Hat or Gnome disgusting clique. Not even talking politics, these people can go to great length to discredit, deface or extinguish competing projects. They have extremely poor values and are highly toxic in general, giving a bad look indeed to open source.
Outside of those, Daniel Foré too will push his political agenda at any cost, lauding murderers included when it fits the narrative (same as their code of conducts).
No surprise at least Herbst and Foré went on praizing his assassination. Really pathetic.
If it was the opposite, Kirk would just have a respectful word for them and abstain from being rude. That’s how things are. But the aforementioned degenerate clique is totalitarian, and any mean justifies their ends, as we just witnessed. Human garbage.
Let’s keep this topic respectful please. Remember the ubuntu code of conduct.
Whether you agree or not with certain people throwing around perceived adjectives describing those views can and will adversely impact others.
If this topic goes down a negative route I will lock the thread. This is something I really don’t want todo.
Not putting ALL devs into one bucket. I think the real problem here is management failing to reprimand these employees. And yes, it also happened at Microsoft and with other Tech giants. At least Microsoft issued a statement. I’m glad there hasn’t been any of this at Ubuntu.
I’d never even heard of Kirk before this happened. I’ve been doing some research and what I discovered is eye opening. Yes, he was (what a lot of people would call) right leaning most of his life, but his views were changing radically. Apparently, that didn’t sit well with certain people. And yes, you’re right. Kirk always allowed people to speak (debate with him) without shouting them down.
Since when « free speech » is an allowance for hate speech ?
Anyway, not sure this kind of topic has its place in this forum.
The ones who truly lost out are the Wife and Children, Hope they will be alright with their Husband/Dad no longer with them. Sad times indeed.
Hate speech (for some people) is the speech they hate to hear. The BIG question is: Who has the right to decide what Hate is? In America speech is protected by the first Amendment of the Constitution.
I agree with you. And bashing the father immediately after his death, or using his death for your political gains is wrong.
Well said, could not agree more with you on that for sure. .
From my humble point of view, at the risk of incurring the wrath of some of you, I would say that I found the ‘IT’ excuse to publish this topic rather far-fetched right from the start.
I agree with @Coeur-Noir that it has no place on this forum.
I even thought it would be unpublished. In any case, that’s what we would do on the forum I contribute to elsewhere, in accordance with the code of conduct that everyone is supposed to have accepted when registering.
It’s so easy to make people say things they didn’t say and to exploit this event in many different ways, some of which are not necessarily well-intentioned, as we saw all around the world in the days that followed.
This topic has no place here, that’s all.
Best regards.
If you wish to take it down, I won’t be mad at you or fossfreedom. In a digital way, we’ve known each other almost four years now and had many good exchanges. I’m a grown man not a child, why would I be mad? You will not be incurring may wrath. Do what you think is best. ![]()
Thanks for your kind reply, @Germoney,
In any case, I am not trying to lecture anyone: I am just a member of this forum interested in UB and mutual assistance.
I had not said anything until now, thinking that my point of view had no more relevance to this forum than the subject in question.
But the latest replies, and especially the fact that there are still replies, have prompted me to give my opinion.
