Help testing budgie desktop with Magpie

Hi Folks,

our upstream have issued a blog that we think you would be interested in - its the “where we are with budgie and where we are going”.

I’m part of this upstream team and I have been looking at “Magpie v0.9.x” - the budgie specific window manager. This will eventually evolve into a “Magpie v1” which will be a Wayland only desktop.

So your Ubuntu Budgie team would like you to get involved by testing Magpie now. This will form the basis of our 24.04 LTS release - with a good wind - v1 with Wayland will form the basis of 24.10 and beyond.

How can I help?

Its straightforward - you just need to be running Ubuntu Budgie 23.04 or the current in-development 23.10 version of UB

In a terminal copy paste

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/magpie-wm
sudo apt full-upgrade

Reboot and just use budgie as you normally would. What we are interested in is there anything unexpected that you think did work in the past but no longer does.

After testing you can safely purge the PPA and return to the repository version by running the command below:

sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/magpie-wm

Reboot
