How do I install the latest budgie desktop?

For our Long Term Support community we recommend the standard budgie-desktop, budgie-control-center and budgie-extras that is available in the normal repositories.

These have the most testing on 22.04 and regularly have stability and critical patches added to them to fix key issues the community have engaged with the team with by filing a Launchpad issue and have helped to test the patch release.

We recognise though that there are many of our community who would like to get “the latest” available version but do not want to move away from the LTS.

We as the Ubuntu Budgie developer team provide a PPA with the latest stable version of budgie-desktop, budgie-control-center and budgie-extras released after 6 months of development for the next stable series i.e. 22.10/23.04 & 23.10.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntubudgie/backports-budgie
sudo apt full-upgrade

logout and login

This PPA contains software built specifically for our LTS distro both for the regular desktop and for the raspberry pi4 (arm64). The Ubuntu Budgie team have done some health checks for this PPA and are content there are no killer showstoppers!

If you want to revert back to the standard LTS release of budgie then you can use

sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntubudgie/backports-budgie

logout and login.
