Iv’e lost the test sounds.
I mean, those sound that you should hear when you press a button to hear the left or right speaker,
In the settings application, audio page , output section, test button
Pressing them I don’t hear anything
Im using Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
Any suggestion ?
If you are using pulseaudio, I would start with this
systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket && systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service
systemctl --user start pulseaudio.socket && systemctl --user start pulseaudio.service
You might also need to remove (back it up under a different name) your ~/.config/pulse folder between stopping and restarting.
Then report if it still doesn’t work.
No, it does not work
Did the stopping and starting at least go successfully?
Usually, there are 5 possibilities for me when pulseaudio is acting up.
- Restart the services.
- Remove ~/.config/pulse
- Go to a terminal and launch alsamixer then press F6 and pick the correct soundcard (alsamixer will display all the volume controls)
- Reboot (I hate that one, feels like Windows)
- Last resort is to purge everything pulseaudio (but pay attention to dependencies that could be removed in the process) then reinstall, although you might lose some config so don’t hesitate to back up /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and /etc/pulse/default.pa if you’ve modified them.
Stop and start went ok.
Then I backed up and deleted /etc/pulse and ~/.config/pulse and
also uninstalled and reinstalled successfullt pulseaudio, and ubuntu-sounds, but the problem persists.
I must add that all the music functions works properly, except those two little sounds.
this is the operation’s log:
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio

you don’t appear to be running Ubuntu Budgie - you are using TuxedoOS. We have no idea what Tuxedo does with their distro. Better to ask via Tuxedo support.
My advice is to download Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.2 to a USB stick and boot into a live session. Test that the sounds work correctly. This will tell you if its a hardware issue or something to-do with Tuxedo.
I don’t think this is TuxedoOS.
It just so happens that I have a Tuxedo as well and they have 3-4 PPAs for Ubuntu since they actively support their Linux laptops and they have packages in the most important distros (in the AUR for Arch or Manjaro, in OpenSuSE/Fedora, etc…).
That’s weird.
I have to say that these have always solved my issues, including the last time (I also had lost my output devices in the Gnome settings sound test pop-up, and had no sound at all).
You can also try to replace pulseaudio by pipewire as it’s the future anyway (you can always roll back). It works with Budgie for me.
I confirm this is TuxedoOs, a derivative of Ubuntu Budgie made by Tuxedo Computers.
I want to add that initially he sounds were working, than I made a mess disinstalling and reinstalling pulseaudio and alsasound, since I had other problems, but I don’t remember exactly what I did.
If nobody can help, I’ll try to contact Tuxedo (but they are not very quick to answer…)
'fraid not - it has nothing to-do with Ubuntu Budgie - nor ubuntu. It is built by Tuxedo using their own tools and we are not sure of the packages Tuxedo uses since Tuxedo uses their own repositories.
This is one of the key reasons Tuxedo cannot say its a Ubuntu derivative.
My bad then.
You went for TuxedoOS. Beside this specific annoyance, is it any good?
I went for “bare” and transferred my Ubuntu + Manjaro installs on the new NVMe SSD. Since they have really good BIOS, drivers and goodies (tools) support, I really tthought you did the same as me and added the PPAs.
They can barely cope with the crazy demand they’re facing and they receive hundreds of inquiries per day (small structure) regarding support or delay inquiries, so yeah, I wouldn’t expect much reactivity. They are very communicative and upfront about it, so I don’t blame them.
Anyway, even it it’s not Ubuntu Budgie, it’s till Budgie, is it OK for @fossfreedom and others if we still try to help him?
feel free to help. I’ll step away. My interests are only if this is Debian + Budgie (which we support) or Ubuntu Budgie itself.
Well, I’m not a Linux expert, but apart that problem it seems to work quite well. I’m using the original Tuxedo Os, installed from their automated installer. I had to reinstall it once, 'cause some mess I made, after that the sounds were ok. After other changes however the problem appeared.
Anyway don’t bother. I’ll seek Tuxedo assistance or reinstall the os.
