My video card is a workforce GTS450. I set the two connected displays to “Duplicate” and it works fine. Then I tried to save the configured settings but it won’t let me save them in the /etcX11/xorg.conf file as such file doesn’t exist.
Using nemo I created the empty xorg.conf document and then tried to save again, but without success.
The driver is correct (390.157).
the answer I get is:

Can you suggest me how to work to solve the problem? Thank you

How are you launching nvidia settings?

Use pkexec with the app name since the file is being written to a system area that pkexec will grant

Before launch nvidia via the program icon.
Now via terminale:

apanta@apanta-desktop:~$ pkexec '/usr/share/applications/nvidia-settings.desktop'

But when I press enter the result is:

apanta@apanta-desktop:~$ pkexec '/usr/share/applications/nvidia-settings.desktop'
Error executing /usr/share/applications/nvidia-settings.desktop: Permission denied

I also tried:

apanta@apanta-desktop:~$ pkexec /usr/bin/nvidia-settings

ERROR: The control display is undefined; please run `/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
       --help` for usage information.

apanta@apanta-desktop:~$ /usr/bin/nvidia-settings
       --help

I spotted this

Do you have a file /usr/share/screen-resolution-extra/nvidia-polkit ?

If so the suggested fix is

sudo chmod u+x /usr/share/screen-resolution-extra/nvidia-polkit

The file exists, but when I give the command, this is the response

apanta@apanta-desktop:~$ sudo chmod u+x /usr/share/screen-resolution-extra/nvidia-polkit
sudo: /etc/sudo.conf is world writable
sudo: /etc/sudo.conf is world writable
sudo: /etc/sudoers è scrivibile da tutti
sudo: nessuna sorgente valida di sudoers trovata, uscita
sudo: errore nell'inizializzare il plugin di audit sudoers_audit
apanta@apanta-desktop:~$

You have bigger issues than the nvidia settings.

You seem to have messed up your sudo rights.

A more generic ubuntu forum can help here. It isnt a budgie specific issue

askubuntu.com and ubuntuforums.org

After several tries, suddenly the command worked and then I was able to save the settings. Thanks for your help
How can I mark the post as solved?

Even though I solved the problem, I preferred to switch to a fresh install of Ubuntu budgie 22.04 lts.
Installed without problems, with nvidia drivers and everything works perfectly.

I would advise that you choose an alternative driver. Nvidea ended support for 390 at the end of last year.

FYI

true true. The OP though I think is limited - its either use the 390 legacy driver - or just use the out of the box opensource nouveau driver. The graphics model is too old for the newer nvidia drivers.

Nouveau is a good alternative now. Overheating issues seem to have been fixed.

Thanks again for your patience
