Does your notebook reliably lock the screen and the screen blanks ok?
If you don’t have gnome-shell-common installed, then your issues are highly likely to be a linux kernel issue - your hardware/firmware isn’t fully recognised by the kernel power management routines. A bug report will be needed on launchpad to notify the kernel maintainers. They will then ask you to try out later versions of the kernel to see if your issue is resolved.
