Unable to install nemo-preview in budgie 24.04 - old dependency

Hello, I tried to use the budgie-welcome app to install nemo-preview, but it fails to install. I dropped to a terminal and ran sudo apt install nemo-preview and it looks like it is due to an old dependency no longer offered in 24.04. Here’s what the apt output says:

The following packages have unmet dependencies: nemo-preview : Depends: gir1.2-webkit2-4.0 but it is not installable

It looks like 24.04 has gir1.2-webkit2-4.1, but gir1.2-webkit2-4.0 is not available as an installable package. Is this something that must be updated on the nemo-preview package, or upstream? I’m not sure the proper path for resolution, so I just thought I would mention it here.

I am loving the Ubuntu Budgie experience, by the way. It looks great!

Hi @T0beus!
If this feature is really important to you, here is a workaround until the problem is fixed:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install nautilus gnome-sushi

Just tap the space bar.

“gnome-sushi” is better than its fork “nemo-preview” — even in version 6.2.0.

Easy enough fix. Will look at this in the next few days.

ok - more complicated than I thought.

The key part is that nemo-preview now installs correctly for both noble and oracular.

From a quick test it previews correctly when pressing space all file types - with the exception of PDFs. I’ve attempted to patched nemo-previews to work with our default PDF viewer called Atril - this needs more finessing to work.

This will install nautilus as well - so if this is your intention, fair enough. Remember the default file-manager in our distro is nemo.

I’m good to use nemo instead of nautilus. I tried to install the nemo-preview package today and it worked great. I confirmed that it is not working right with the PDF preview, as you said, but it seems to work fine for pictures at least. It’s not an essential feature for me personally, so I’ll be patient for the finessing of the PDF preview, whenever the time is right. Just glad the package dependencies are fixed for now. Great work, thanks!

PDF previews now work for the latest update.

I just tried it today, and it works great for PDFs. Nice work, and thank you!

I also think Nemo’s more interesting than Nautilus.
I’ve only suggested this because I didn’t think it would get fixed so quickly.

Too bad “gnome-preview” doesn’t offer a slightly larger preview or a link to open files in the dedicated application.
