The Ubuntu Budgie team meets once a month to discuss recent updates and what’s coming next for Ubuntu Budgie. Meeting notes from Ubuntu Budgie team meeting of 18 May 2025, 16:30 UTC.

The meeting started with power outages, Element meeting issues, and Bathtub-like audio sounds :eyes: It looks like the budgies always have something that prevents them from being bored :parrot:

  • The team needs to make a “look and feel” decision. Panel auto-hide does not work on wayland. The proposal is to use default settings supported by budgie default and future wayland compositors and remove the dock. Replace the dock with a single bar either top or bottom. Icon only task-list anchored in the center of the bar.
  • 10.10 upstream has only one remaining blocker for the display manager. This is possibly going to be released within one month.
  • Many Budgie applets are already converted to 10.10. Missing drop-by and showtime applets. Not converted yet
  • Debian is in freeze and unlikely to open before Ubuntu 25.10 freeze.
  • Shuffler is going away. @fossfreedom would love it if someone who loves sway that would like to put some effort to integrate sway with Budgie.
  • Hot corners are going away unless someone can package waycorners
  • Icon themes support work have been packaged under flatpak by @Kyuyrii . This makes flatpak apps integrate better with the budgie themes. We would like to add an additional button next to “install flatpak support” that adds “flatpak themes support”
  • Future work for bridging wayfire for more visual effects in ubuntu budgie. We would like to ask other flavors to see if there is any interest in similar work to make wayland more exciting.
  • Check ubuntu budgie store test run of purchases. Specifically make sure that price paid by end user matches decently with charges to the project and ensure there are no problems.
  • @GrindamN has been working on a new wiki system, which looks really easy to use.
  • Element channel for meetings needs to be checked in order to make sure that it works (Extensions)

Sorry Guys… I’ve always been a Big Fan of Ubuntu Budgie and even supported it with yearly donations. I’ve gotten family members to use it also. But if you remove the DOCK and destroy that experience, I’ll have to find another Distro. Maybe Solis, or Zorin Pro? Even if I must pay for it, I need that Mac feeling. I hope you will reconsider. Getting rid of the DOCK is like getting rid of your Iconic Wallpaper. It won’t be the same.

The upstream choice of using labwc for the window manager precludes using any wayland dock with dodge and intellihide features..

However using sway + waybar does give a dock experience.

We’ll also be looking at wayfire+crystal dock to see what happens there.

The meeting notes reflect the immediate change on the upstream v10.10 release. We’ll still be looking at the art of the possible for the 26.04LTS
