This is going to sound insane but just recently (today) I’ve been experiencing frequent crashing with budgie desktop. It always seems to happen when I’m scrolling in Firefox using the “autoscroll” feature (the feature where you can click+hold the middle mouse button and drag down/up to scroll the page).
When this happens, I’m immediately brought back to the login screen.
I went down the rabbithole of reverting drivers, refreshing firefox settings to default, etc. Nothing seems to help.
Workaround is to just not use the autoscroll feature but this seems buggish… is this happening for anyone else?
In case it’s useful, I’m using the deb package version of firefox (not snap). I’m also on an older system (hp prodesk mini pc).
Any thoughts? Is there a process for reporting a bug?
yep - about an hour ago it was reported on upstream’s matrix channel. Its affecting all distros who have just uplifted to firefox v146. It doesnt occur with firefox v145.
I can reproduce this with the deb version of firefox installed from the mozilla PPA on ubuntu budgie 24.04
I cannot reproduce this with the snap version of firefox on the wayland budgie v10.10 on 26.04.
monitoring other distros. No one has found what the cause is to-date nor any suggested workarounds other than not to use the autoscroll feature.
Looking on mozilla’s bugzilla, autoscroll has been problematic for 10-15 years now across all sorts of desktops. No one has filed a bug report though on bugzilla for budgie’s issues.
Another trivial update. Latest Firefox update (147.0) still has the issue.
I know it’s not necessarily a budgie problem to fix. I’m just posting/updating here in case other people come across the issue and are curious. Thanks!
That’s interesting. It hasn’t happened for me (yet) when opening a new tab. Only mouse-induced autoscroll. I agree that it likely has a common cause though.
I also seem to notice it when scrolling down infinite page sites. So I wonder if it’s a combination of firefox constructing appended page elements and autoscroll. Hmm…
