Why is the screenlock function not working on a fresh install of Ubuntu Budgie?

Hi,

I’m running:

  • Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS (64-bit)
  • Budgie version 10.9.1

Everything is working great except when I try to use the screen lock feature (via the power icon in the upper right of screen), nothing happens.

I noticed a thread mentioning to run sudo apt purge gnome-shell-common but when I try, I get:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Package 'gnome-shell-common' is not installed, so not removed
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  git-man liberror-perl libgtksourceview-4-0 libgtksourceview-4-common
  libllvm17t64
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 6 not upgraded.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Are you using fractional scaling in budgie-control-center displays? That would block screenlocking.

I am indeed. That’s probably it… although I’m curious why the initial login screen works?

I guess because fractional scaling doesn’t kick in until after initial login?

The lock screen and login screen are two different pieces of software. The lock screen is incompatible with fractional scaling.

This is an area that will be fixed with the upcoming wayland release of budgie-desktop for 25.04 and later.

Hi, I’m new to Ubuntu Budgie and I really love it! But I have a few small bugs (I’m a simple user) like this one: it’s identical for me ‘lock’ doesn’t work from the top menu. yet I haven’t activated split scaling. do you have any idea what the problem is? Thanks for your help!
I’m not fluent in English: I use a translator

In a terminal run the following

sudo apt purge gnome-shell-common gdm3

Please note, this will uninstall gnome-shell

Aaaand ?

Aaaand ?

Unless I’ve tinkered a bit too much with the 24.04, it makes absolutely no difference.
On the other hand, as far as I can tell, locking works natively on 24.10 or 25.04.

It’s ok now ! thank you !
