Can anybody help! I upgraded from Budgie 22.04 to 24.04 and now my sharing files with other computers on my network is not working. I cannot find a fix or an article that has helped to fix this problem. I do not know how to code, so if someone has a simple straight forward solution with steps to take, please let me know.
Hi,
if youāre talking about Samba, is an old affair ⦠Iāve workarounded it by editing /etc/samba/smb.conf (and as usual restarting smbd and nmbd).
Sil
[EDIT]
for example, Iāve shared a directory, /mnt/XXX/Share, to be accessible and writable by every member of shareusers group (if you prefer not to create a specific group, just use standard sambashare group); at the end of /etc/samba/smb.conf Iāve added the following directive:
[Share]
path = /mnt/XXX/Share
browseable = yes
guest ok = no
readonly = no
writeable = yes
force group = shareusers
create mask = 0664
force directory mode = 2775
notice that last directive allows share directory inherit created directories with the same group
Silvia,
Thank You for your reply.
Yes itās Samba.
The problem Iām having is that I cannot edit the samba.conf file. I do not know how to reset the permissions to allow me to edit the file.
Since I do not know how to program, I am at a loss for all of this.
Would you be kind enough to show me how to do it?
Can you send me the commands to use on the terminal to get into the samba.conf file and what lines to edit so that I can get file sharing on my local network.
Is there a GUI that can do all this??
(nice name ā puffettacicciotella, with a name like that you must be ITALIAN.
Puffo femmina creata dal mago Gargamella per portare scompiglio nel villaggio dei Puffi. bionda, carina ed elegante, CORRECT??) LOL

Sorry to intrude on your conversation
, but perhaps you could try this line?
sudo -H gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf
Perhaps you could also check out this topic, and this post in particular.

Thanks to all who answered.
I finally figured out how to edit my samba.conf file.
Now that I did that I can see the other computers on my network.
My next problem is that while with Budgie 22.04 I was able to see the W7 computer and access files, that is no longer possible with Budgie 24.04.
I set up and Network share on W7 (as I did for 22.04) but get nowhere.
I get an error message āfailed to retrieve share list from server: invalid argumentā ā CAN Anybody give me a solution for that??? an appreciation to those who can help.
Thanks!!
Thats probably because your windows 7 share is using v1 of the samba protocol.
You really dont want to downgrade your samba config to enable v1 because this is inherently insecure allowing anyone poking around in your network easy access to all your files.
You really should think carefully here. Best throw away windows 7. Move your shared files to a ubuntu based machine.
I was just going to suggest you a solution that seems to work, but what @fossfreedom has just answered dissuades me. ![]()
Jean,
Thanks for the concern (and thanks to David also for the warning).
Since I only use my W7 as a backup and activate the system only when backing up and then shut down W7, if you can kindly give me your proposed solution, I would appreciate it.
[Presently, since W7 is already set up, it would eliminate setting up another system]
Sal,
For me, Samba is still associated with boring computer courses and I donāt know very much about it. I just did a search based on your error message.
Iām not sure if this is the solution to your problem and if itās transposable to UB 24.04, but itās worth a try.
Edit ā/etc/samba/smb.confā and add these two lines after line 29, like this:
# Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of
workgroup = WORKGROUP
client min protocol = NT1
server min protocol = NT1
Then reboot or restart service:
systemctl restart smbd
If this doesnāt work, nothing prevents you from consulting the other pages found by my Google Search.
This one in particular:
Try, come back and tell us.
Whilst this will work, this is a permanent change and will open your desktop to anyone on your network.
I urge you to strongly take the next step sooner rather than later with a secure backup mechanism. Revert this change when you do.
Thank You all, I will try it and see what happens.
On my network is also a Ubuntu 22.04 computer. There I get as far as to see the shared folders, but when it asks for the credentials (or Anonymous ) I get the same message as with the W7 currently. Do I have to make changes to UB 22.04 or to my Budgie samba.conf file. As you can see with Budgie 24.04 all this is new to me.
First try adding these two lines to UB 24.04, Sal.
If this works, you can do it on your UB 22.04 installation too.
And if it works and youāre interested, I can suggest you a way of easily configuring the ā/etc/samba/smb.confā file on demand, so as not to risk exposing your network.
This doesnt sound like the best way forward.
I would ensure 24.04 is configured to ensure trying with the highest protocol version (server max protocol = SMB3) and ensuring 22.04 is similarly using the highest version.
Then at least the samba negatiation is starting from the strongest security rather than from the weakest.
Thanks everyone for being helpful.
Instead of modifying any files I will use a client that works on all my machines and not have to deal with coding. NOTHING is simple anymore..LOL>>
Any suggestions???
Iām glad youāve found your solution, but Iād like to know if the one I suggested works because, in terms of ease, what Iād suggest isnāt bad either ā simply typing āonā or āoffā (for example) in the terminal with automatic installation.
Jean,
Unfortunately your solution did not work for me. (I really donāt know why)
I do agree that your solution is pretty easy, if only I could have used it, it would have been fine.
Thank You for your help.
Thanks for your feedback, Sal.
Iām not competent enough to know which setting would work, nor do I have the installation to test it.
But hey, since youāve found your solution, it doesnāt matter.
