Greetings …I am new to linux so please have pity … lol
I tried ubuntu 24.04 on a dual boot with another linux OS and it worked fine …albeit slow … i think its because i only have 4 gig of ram … so i changed over to Budgie and now i get no sound …although the soundbar works when i do a sound check. the headphones work but i think they are driven by the builtin intel drivers… the hdmi from my nvidia card is whats not working …works fine on the other dual boot distro … i hope this makes some sense
Hi, @monkeyno28!
The problem seems well-known.
Check your nvidia driver version:
dpkg -l | grep nvidia-driver
Maybe you could try this:
I am curious: what is the other Linux distribution that works?
im running elementay os hera on the same system and using my spare drive to check out others … it uses nvidia 340 driver because the next one 390 just messes everything up…tried to install in budgie but says “unknown” so tried 535 as in above article but no hdmi shows up in sound window
It seems like your version of elementary OS is based on an older version of Ubuntu. Unfortunately, the kernel of that version used to be compatible with the 340 driver, but it’s no longer the case. That’s why you can’t find it in the Ubuntu 24.04 repositories.
However, there might be a workaround for you. You could try installing the 340 driver from this PPA by following the instructions provided. But please keep in mind that there’s no guarantee it will work:
I know it can be frustrating when hardware becomes obsolete, and sometimes there’s no way around it.
This sounds like a great alternative … i just wonder why it wont work with nouveau either.
same hardware /gpu with hera works with either nouveau or nvidia 340 even tho it wont on budgie/ … 2404 ubuntu worked no problem except not enough memory the sound bar shows movement but no sound
except with headphones
Hera is elementary 5, isn’t it?
Have you had a try with elementary 7?
Sometimes a new version of Ubuntu (or a new kernel) will fix problems, sometimes it will create them. “Va comprendre, Charles”, as they say in France.
Think thats based on 18.04 … so really old and out of free support even for Ubuntu.
Without actually having the same hardware as thr OP its difficult to diagnose but yeah, nvidia no longer supports the old graphics card
If this is a desktop then its easy enough to buy a supported graphics card for the price of a couple cups of coffee.
If this is a intel/nvidia desktop then maybe sticking with intel graphics is better.
