Help us test pipewire audio

Hi everyone.

One of the big changes coming to 22.10 will be the replacement of pulseaudio with pipewire.

In practical terms - what manages your audio sound will be changed.

We need to be assured that things work as you would expect - so we need your help.

We have a PPA available that can be used to test on Kinetic.

So grab a Kinetic daily ISO and install on some spare hardware. If you have a virtual machine available then a bit more work will be needed for you.

Let us know how you get on.

  1. Install the latest ubuntu budgie daily Ubuntu Budgie 22.10 (Kinetic Kudu) Daily Build

  2. Add the PPA

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/pipewire
    sudo apt purge pipewire-media-session-
    sudo apt upgrade
    sudo apt install gnome-remote-desktop
    sudo apt autoremove
    reboot --

Note - the โ€œ-โ€ at the purge of pipewire-media-session is really needed.

  1. Check your audio playback. Check raven - devices. Check Budgie Control Center - Sounds

  2. For virtual machines you may encounter stuttering audio. This is the current upstream workaround Troubleshooting ยท Wiki ยท PipeWire / pipewire ยท GitLab N.B. I would reboot after making those changes

  3. For Firefox - using youtube etc can be a bit hit and miss - another upstream workaround is described here Performance tuning ยท Wiki ยท PipeWire / pipewire ยท GitLab

  4. Importantly if you find any hints and tips please let us know.

We would expect many if not all of the above workarounds to be automatically resolved by the time of the release - hopefully.

Firefox and Spotify work great, chromium based browsers have audio shutter. Had the same problem on Endevour os Budgie.

Pipewire is now the default for UB 22.10 - it will be available in todays (28th June) daily image without pulseaudio being installed.

The PPA ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/pipewire can now safely be purged.
