I like the Plank and wonder if it is a plugin or setting that it can show a little preview of the open apps when hovering mouse over it.
I often have several Calc books open/minimized, and it would have been a nice feature. Could also be that it is a shortcut key combo that could help in this matter also. I have not used this system more than a month, so have not found all smart things to do yet.
Not on Plank, but:
Are you aware of previews? (Main menu > Previews Control > enable). It can show you either an overview of all applications (Alt Tab) or only current application (Alt above-Tab).
