Many AppIndicator icons missing under 25.10

Many of my applications that can display a tray icon no longer do so under 25.10, releases prior to this seemed to display tray icons fine.

I have the AppIndicator Applet added to my panel. I have also added the legacy Carbon Tray to see if that would display any extra icons, but it has not.

Not Displaying:

  • Feishin (Appimage)
  • Heroic Launcher (Flatpak)
  • Discord (deb)
  • Element (deb)
  • Bitwarden (Appimage)
  • Trillium Notes (deb)
  • Teams for Linux (deb)
  • Kuro (snap)
  • Jellyfin MPV Shim (Flatpak)
  • KDE Connect (deb)

Displaying:

  • Steam (deb)
  • NextCloud Files (Appimage)
  • Ulauncher (deb)
  • ZapZap (Flatpak)
  • Faugus Launcher (deb)
  • Feeling Finder (Flatpack)

I’d appreciate any pointer on where to start looking, since I’m likely looking in the wrong places.

I’ve tried monitoring the terminal output of an app when enabling the tray icon, and monitoring journalctl when toggling the tray icon but no messages are produced relating to the tray icon.

Does the following work on some/most/all of the apps that are not displaying?

In a terminal type

GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID=this-is-deprecated
export GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID

Then from the terminal run the app - i.e. run the app from the same terminal session - not from the menu

Thanks for the reply.

Setting the GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID envar as you requested does get the tray icons to show again when running them in that terminal session.

Will I have to set this variable to persist in my bashrc, or is there something else I should be doing?

Edit: adding the export to a new file in /etc/profile.d/ seems to be working for now until I know a bit more about this.

Adding it to ~/.bashrc or /etc/environment.d/ didn’t seem to work.

Yep. .profile or globally in the /etc/profile.d is the correct location.

I will propose this for budgie 10.10 upstream that will form the key part of 26.04
